Lorica Hamata, introduction

Today it begins the treatment on the cuirasses used by the Roman legionaries, I will start from the Lorica Hamata, modern denomination that means hooked cuirass. The complete guide has been divided in more parts, in this article it is introduced and described (available in the Italian Section). This page instead contains the changes and the innovations (towards the original) that will be introduced from time to time. The original and full version is available here.

In this second article is described the construction step by step of this cuirass, I have obtained information from more sources, underlining different aspects and profits to realize it to the best. The guide begins with the description of a fundamental tool for the realization of the rings and it continues with the 4in1 method. Finally some profits suggestions are suggested for composing and to opportunely tighten the strips of created rings and in conclusion it introduces a real model used for manufacturing a chain mail (available in the Italian Section).

After I have introduced and explained the realization and the procedures to assemble the Lorica Hamata; now I am going to describe the construction of the riveted ring, aspect fundamental to complete the build of an autentic cuirass (available in the Italian Section). Pieces from five different mail-shirts have been examined, all dating to the Late pre-Roman Iron Age and the Roman Iron Age. They are an excellent object for studying technological development from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages (Available in the Italian Section). The original and full version is available here.

Lorica segmentata: introduction

Lorica segmentata: introduction

Before the pubblication of some guides to build this type of lorica, I want to introduce the story on its reconstruction, the origin of its name, the various types, highlighting aspects and problematics that have accompanied the laminate cuirass until nowadays, with a look at the future (available in Italian version). This page instead contains the changes and the innovations (towards the original) that will be introduced from time to time. The original version is written by M.C.

Lorica Segmentata: Corbridge shape

Lorica Segmentata: Corbridge shape

The first model of segmental cuirass that I introduce is the Corbridge, a village in Northumberland England, where mostly military iron artefacts were excavated in 1964, thanks to those finds scholars and practising armourers understood and rebuild the Lorica Segmentata (full version is available in the Italian Section). This page instead contains the changes and the innovations (towards the original) that will be introduced from time to time.

In this tutorial I describe how to build a lorica segmentata cuirass, the model called Corbridge type A, from the plates to the assembly. In the next one I will publish the full-sized patterns (as usual the full version is available in the Italian Section). This page instead contains the changes and the innovations (towards the original) that will be introduced from time to time. The original version is written by Matthew Amt, and is available here.
